Starting from the Sunny Valley shelter, you will encounter, after just a few meters, the mule tracks and trenches of the Great War-a sight to be immortalized in a photo shoot. A shot that will remember, then, in a photo, the courage and suffering experienced by a group of men in the name of freedom.
Continuing on the trekking trail, you will be able to observe and enjoy with your eyes the Alpe Pass, Mot De Li Luer and the Term Plan dense with uphill hairpin bends with a maximum gradient of 449 meters.
As anticipated, the route is challenging and the average walking time is around 2-3 hours.
For arrival, therefore, Sunny Valley is perfect for resting and enjoying good Valtellina food.
In the winter of 1915, the year in which the Great War began, Santa Caterina Valfurva, with its Ortles-Cevedale-Adamello mountain giants connecting to the chain of Alps via the Stelvio Pass and the Gavia Pass, became a strategic military point for the defense of our borders.
Military defense lines were built, as high as 3,000 meters, where vantage and lookout points over the surrounding valleys ensured a perfect view of the enemy’s intentions to advance and moves.
Amid the snow and crippling cold, typical of winter in Santa Caterina Valfurva, were erected: trenches, artillery emplacements, and caves for the troops .
Today, walking the mountain trails of Valfurva and, in particular, the Sunny Valley Trail – Dell’Alpe Pass – Mot De Li Leur – Termin Floor, it is possible to find barbed-wire fences, coves dug into caves for sentry posts, and stone bridges and pavements built by soldiers to reach strategic high points for defense.
Today, Santa Caterina Valfurva is, therefore, a place that bears witness to the tragic history of our people and guardian of the pain of the young soldiers engaged in the front.
